A Letter From the Species-Chairs:
Welcome to the 2023 4-H Llama and Alpaca Program!

The following is important information for any youth interested in participating in the 4-H Llama and Alpaca Program this year. We encourage you to check out the educational opportunities and current information on the Northwest Michigan 4-H Livestock Council website, which is a great resource. Under the Llamas and Alpacas tab you will find important dates, record book forms, the guidebook, and more. Explore the website, especially the education tab as you never know what you'll learn in a day!

Education: All 4-Hers age 8-19 need to complete 2 education credits due by June 30th to participate in the 4-H shows. Cloverbuds are welcome to do them as well.  You can do any of the education options to get your credit, and we encourage that one of them be on llamas and alpacas.

Work bees: All 4-Hers age 8-19 are required to complete 2 hours of cleanup at the Fairgrounds on specific dates. Register at SignUp Genius for the date you choose.

Reminder: our Livestock Council meetings are on the first Monday of the month at 6:30pm. We greatly encourage you to join in and be up to date on all that is being offered and done.

Don't hesitate to contact us with questions, ideas, or concerns:

Llama & Alpaca Fair Information
Care Before Fair:
Along with practicing and familiarizing yourself with your animal, a few things you need to do for your animal are:

• Shearing should be done for llamas every other year and for alpacas every year.
This can be anything from a barrel cut, show cut or full body cut.

• Toes need to be checked often and clipped regularly. Pads and toes should be parallel to the ground.
• In addition to your farm worming schedule, worming should be done 1 month before fair with Ivomec or Dectomax
(dosage according to animal weight). Annual CDT is recommended.
For updated information on vaccination schedules, please reference vth.vetmed.wsu.edu
  • Each 4-H member registered in the alpaca and llama program is required to take care of their animals during Fair week.
